South African Chanelle Scheepers advances to the 3rd round of the 2011 Australian Open Pete Ziebron Images
Chanelle Scheepers, Caroline Garcia and Rebecca Marino, three competitors at the 2010 Goldwater Women's Tennis Classic at the Phoenix Country Club continue to play inspired tennis and advance at the 2011 Australian Open. In all, 11 women from the field at the $75,000 ITF Challenger in Phoenix appeared in the main draw but only Scheepers, Garcia and Marino managed to win their matches.
Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa advanced to the 3rd round with a pair of 3 set wins over Karolina Sprem of Croatia and Regina Kulikova of Russia. Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia defeated 2-time defending Goldwater Champion Varvara Lepchenko of the United States in 3 sets to advance to the 2nd round. In addition, Canadian Rebecca Marino defeated Junri Namigata of Japan in 3 sets in 1st round action.
The Goldwater Women's Tennis Classic in Phoenix is the last opportunity of the year for women to accumulate points necessary for qualification for the Australian Open. As a result, the tournament boasted a strong field in 2010. The 11 players in the field that played in the main draw at the 2011 Australian Open include:

Chanelle Scheepers awaits the result of the Victoria Azarenka v. Andrea Hlavackova match and will play the winner in the 3rd round.
