Twenty year-old Italian wildcard Camila Giorgi defeated countrywoman and heavy favorite Francesca Schiavone 6-1 6-3 in 64 minutes at the Western & Southern Open this afternoon.
After each player held serve to open the match, Giorgi won the next 7 games to take the opening set and stake herself to a 2-0 lead in the 2nd set. Ten double faults on the day by the 14th seeded Schiavone contributed to her demise. In fact, Schiavone hit 3 consecutive double faults to open the 6th game of the match as well as double faulting on match point.
For the 92nd ranked Giorgi, today's win on the Grandstand court at the Lindner Family Tennis Center marked her 4th significant victory of the year over a highly ranked opponent. Two of those victories came at Wimbledon, where she was able to reach the 4th round after getting through the qualifying rounds.
